Making Tax Digital (MTD)
MTD ITSA, or Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment, is a UK go vernment initiative that will require self-employed people and landlords to keep digital records of their income and expenses, send quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software, and submit a final annual declaration instead of a traditional Self Assessment tax return.
MTD is currently undergoing a phased roll-out and it’s important that self-employed people understand their obligations both now and in the future and prepare early to ensure a smooth transition and to be compliant and avoid any penalties.
- April 2026 MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment will be mandatory for sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000
- April 2027 MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment will be mandatory for sole traders and landlords earning over £30,000
- April 2028 MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment will be mandatory for sole traders and landlords earning over £20,000
